High Altitude Balloon Project


Pi In The Sky Objective


  1. Launch a High Altitude Balloon (HAB) into space
  2. Achieve a target altitude of ~30KM
  3. Capture videos, still pictures on the way up, down
  4. Record environmental data during ascent, descent using a variety of sensors e.g. altitude, temperature, humidity, pressure, speed, light intensity, etc.
  5. Be able to track ascent, descent and locate the HAB payload at the end of the flight
  6. Offer an opportunity for kids, families part of the Melbourne Raspberry Pi Hackers Group, CoderDojo Altona North, etc. to get involved

Project time line


  • MARCH 2020

    Initial planning and design complete.

  • JUNE 2020

    First field test of sensor package.

  • NOVEMBER 2020

    Second field test with FlexTRAC including multiple LoRA, GPS and ground station communication. Report

  • DECEMBER 2020

    Third field test with better kite and drone as ascent mechanism, sensor pack and more testing of LoRA equipment. Report

  • JANUARY 2021

    Fourth field test with software/hardware testing tracking BOM sonde and reflashed sonde. More plannning. Report

  • FEBRUARY 2021

    Fifth field test with package and car based tracking equipment. Report

  • MARCH 2021

    Test flight One. Reflashed sonde launch, chase and recovery.



Milestones


Milestone 1: Design and build payload. This includes - GPS sensor, Radio Transmitter, Sensor pack, Sensor pack (created by Pi group), batteries, Signage on box, etc. and encase in a suitable package.

Milestone 2: Fly payload using a kite, capture still pictures, capture environmental conditions through deployed sensors (complete).

Milestone 3: Launch payload with parachute from a tall structure, capture still pictures, capture environmental conditions using sensors pack, simulate destruction of balloon, parachute used, prove safe landing.

Milestone 4: Kite / drone flight to 120 metres, capture still pictures, capture environmental conditions using sensors pack, simulate destruction of balloon, parachute used, prove safe landing. 

Milestone 5: Untethered balloon flight to 5,000ft, capture still pictures, capture environmental conditions using sensors pack, destruction of balloon, parachute used, track using chase car, reclaim package

Milestone 6: Untethered balloon flight to 10,000ft, capture still pictures, capture environmental conditions using sensors pack, destruction of balloon, parachute used, track using chase car, reclaim package 

Milestone 7: Untethered balloon flight to 100,000ft, capture still pictures, capture environmental conditions using sensors pack, destruction of balloon, parachute used, track using chase car, reclaim package

CONTRIBUTIONS NEEDED


Costs for the project are adding up we need people to contribute financially. If you are in a position to do so, please read our statement of intent on the next page.

Unfortunately if we do not raise enough money we won't be able to proceed with the balloon launch. However on the bright side we really only need 10 people to contribute $75 in order to reach our goal.
